Attitudes to the Use of Artificial Intelligence in English Writing

This paper explores the attitudes of 192 non-English major graduate students towards the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in an English writing course in a Chinese university. Mixed method of a questionnaire and semi-structured interview was used in this study. The result of a questionnaires reveals that the 91% of the graduate students have used AI in their writing assignment. 93.22% of the students thought using AI had helped them to improve the accuracy, fluency and logic of writing. More than 70% of the students thought AI tools had helped them to accurately use grammar and expand their vocabulary. A significant portion of students, precisely 87.5%, believed that AI had improved the efficacy of writing. 86.93% of them held that AI tools had helped them to improve their overall writing abilities. In addition, the interview of 20 students shows that they all considered AI tools could give them timely feedback and assisted them to boost their confidence of writing in English. They could deal with more complicated writing assignments, such as research papers. However, they also encountered challenges of using AI. These challenges as well as the implication of this study in English writing teaching were also discussed.
